How do the “plus” Democrats succeed in the Presidential primary system where their broader appeal is not an advantage without independent voters? For example, consider Amy Klobuchar in 2020.

I feel like any voter who HATES one party isn't really independent. Unless they also HATE the other party. I've always felt like at least half the "libertarians" I meet can call themselves that, but they vote almost always for Republicans. It's telling that a lot of Republican voters aren't proud enough to register as Republicans, even if that's how they vote. The real issue for me are the progressive voters who reject Democratic candidates for not being 100% with them on every issue. And the uneducated voters who believe everything they see on Fox News, hear in church, etc., and understandably don't vote for the Democrats they believe eat babies and want to make any gun ownership illegal, etc.

This is a very good article, for me as a democrat I think it’s a very realistic overview of how we can start winning back the independents that we lost via having a personally unpopular president like Biden who was too old to do the job and who let far too many people cross the border and allowed inflation to hurt people’s pockets like nobody had seen recently. You have a lot in common with the writers at the excellent newsletter Liberal Patriot but are not as pessimistic! The only person you are wrong about is Rho Khanna who is really doing a fine job as a democrat in the House! And I do feel that the economic left wing like Sanders , Mamdani, and AOC are addressing the growing problem with inequality and unaffordability is going to have increasing appeal to independents!
