White lies, damn lies and statistics.

My grandfather used to say there are three kinds of lies; white lies, damn lies and statistics. The latter is where your article loses its validity. Using the NY Times as a source for import stats is akin to using The View. If we use the U.S. Govts stats, they clearly show imports from China are down YTD (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/IMPCH). Now, there’s a lot of mud in those stats- the pre-tariff buildup, the moving goal posts of the actual rate, etc. but overall, imports from China are down.

Secondly, you suggest the inflation we’re experiencing is driven by tariffs. Again, the stats don’t support that- the main drivers of inflation are housing costs, food, power and insurance (mostly auto and home)… only food is affected by tariffs.

In the short to mid-term, Tariffs drive unemployment. When the cost of goods sold suddenly jumps by 20% how do companies react? They cut discretionary spending, postpone CAPEX and reduce headcount. Trump knows this and that plays a big role in his mission to correct the immigration debacle from the Weekend at Bernies administration. The fewer jobseekers here, the higher employment.

Lastly, to imply Marjorie Taylor Green is the voice of the majority of conservatives is way off. She’s the AOC of the right. Sure, they’re entertaining and good for headlines, but the majority of people don’t take them seriously.
